I am a michigander who loves to travel, whether it is a day trip or overnight. Unfortunately, I have a very small budget and most of our travel has to be very inexpensive or I can't do it. So, I decided to share some of my money saving travel tips with you and let you in on good deals when I see them! This site is for anyone who loves to travel and doesn't have much money to do it. I will mainly feature locations around Michigan or Northern Ohio.

The Holland Tulip Festival!
May 4-11, 2013
Celebrating since 1929!
Mission Statement: The Holland Tulip Time Festival invites the world to join the dance as we celebrate our Dutch heritage with a festival showcasing our dynamic community and its spectacular tulips.
Welcome to the Tulip Time Festival! Since 1929, the small city of Holland, Michigan has blossomed with literally hundreds of thousands of tulips — and an equal number of tulip-lovers who attend our annual Tulip Time Festival.
In 2011, we celebrated the bicentennial anniversary of the birth of the founder of Holland, Michigan: Reverend Albertus C. Van Raalte, who led his congregation of Dutch Calvinists in founding our city in 1847. To commemorate his birth, a Bilateral Conference took place in Holland, Michigan and the Netherlands in the fall of 2011. For more information, visitwww.dutchheritagewestmichigan.com.
All the info is at www.tuliptime.com

Travel Tip for the Week
Avoid gas station spending:
The only reason you need a gas station should be to get gas, but many times, when I don't prepare for a trip, 5-10 dollars can be spent at each stop on food, snacks and drinks.
To avoid extra spending make sure you prepare for your driving by following some of these helpful tips:
1. Make coffee at home, fill up to go mugs and then take a thermos with you for refills. Thermoses will keep your coffee warm for hours! Also, if you like sugar or specialty creamers, go ahead and add them to the thermos so you can just pour and go.
2. Make your own snack bag. Make sure you purchase snacks and food that you like to eat on the road before your trip. It is much cheaper to buy ahead of time than to pay convenient store prices.
3. Take a small cooler with some cold waters or soft drinks. The average cost of a 20 oz bottle of soda from the convenient store will cost you 1.50 or more. If you purchase a 8 pack of bottles at grocer, it might cost 3.99 or even less if you catch a sale! That's 50 cents or less a bottle.
4. Make sure you have gum and candy too!
It really does pay to plan ahead and avoid spending too much money at stops along the way. This will make your trip quicker as well, since you don't have to roam around the gas station, you can fill up and be on your way!!!

TIp of the Week: The Days you travel affect cost!
Tip for the Week: If your work schedule is flexible and will allow it, travel on Sunday night or Monday night for better rates. Rates are highest on Friday and Saturday nights. If you can travel on Sunday night you save from 25% to 40% on rooms. Luckily our day off is Monday, so we usually travel on Sunday night and stay Sunday night or Monday night at a hotel.
